Could Arsenal really sign this £7m Chelsea legend?

Cech3Wojciech Szczesny is a funny character. Your confidence in his goalkeeping ability tends to come and go on a game-by-game basis. Yes, he’s capable of the occasional Man of the Match performance, but he’s also capable of errors of judgement and calamitous mistakes.

I’m still convinced that he’s one of the best shot-stoppers in the Premier League. He’s lightening quick and his reflexes are remarkable. Unfortunately, there’s a rashness to his game that often leaves Arsenal’s defense over-exposed. He seems to be overly keen to claim the ball, even if there’s no chance that he’ll beat an opposition player to it.

He gives away a lot of penalties and he’s often left flapping at the ball in mid-air. He’s a player that Arsenal can’t really rely on. Given the state of The Gunners defense at the moment, having a jumpy goalkeeper isn’t exactly ideal.

This leads me nicely onto The Metro‘s claim that Arsenal are ‘preparing’ a £7m bid for Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech. The Blues legend is currently playing second fiddle at Stamford Bridge and it’s thought that Jose Mourinho won’t stand in his way should he opt to move on.

That’s as maybe, but it’s not clear whether the Portuguese mastermind would let Cech move to The Emirates. Cech may have fallen behind Thibaut Courtois in the pecking order, but he’s still a top goal-keeper. Given that Mourinho vetoed Demba Ba’s move to Arsenal two summers ago, why would things be any different this time around?

Still, with the aforementioned source claiming that Arsenal are willing to match Cech’s £100k-a-week wages, perhaps there is something to these rumours. The 32-year-old has always been very loyal to Chelsea, but given his current situation, perhaps he’d be willing to adopt a change of scenery?

Either way, The Gunners need to find some meaningful competition for Wojciech Szczesny. If Arsene Wenger feels that their current second choice option, David Ospina, isn’t up for the job, then he’s right to start the hunt for somebody new.

What’s your take? Should The Gunners swoop in for this Chelsea legend?
