Are Liverpool right to make this £31.2m ace a ‘priority’ signing?

IscoFrom what we’ve seen thus far, this season is set up to be something of a disappointment. With so many teams struggling to find their groove, Chelsea are already carving out a huge lead at the head of the Premier League table. Unfortunately none of English football’s other big clubs seem up to the challenge ahead of them. Arsenal can’t hold a lead, Manchester United are still re-building and City are struggling.

This should have created a good opportunity for Liverpool to build on their impressive showing from last season. Unfortunately, Luis Suarez left in the summer and Brendan Rodgers has struggled to replace him.

Yes, he brought in Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert during the summer transfer window, but it’s not like either of these forwards are in the goals at the moment. One of them could still come good, but at the moment things aren’t looking too promising.

This makes me wonder: will Brendan Rodgers use the upcoming January transfer window as an opportunity to try and get a little more out of his forward line? Could the right signing help to bring the most out of Mario Balotelli (and Daniel Sturridge, when he’s fully fit)?

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that The Reds are ‘pushing to sign’ Real Madrid’s star midfielder, Isco. The source goes as far as to suggest that Liverpool have made the Spaniard a ‘priority’ signing. If this is true, it’s very exciting news indeed.

At 22-years-old, Isco has already demonstrated an inordinate amount of talent. Last season he played 53 games for Real Madrid and found the back of the net 11 times. This combined with his unselfish nature makes him an excellent asset for the Spanish powerhouse.

Unfortunately for The Reds, Isco won’t come cheap. The aforementioned source claims that Real Madrid won’t sell for less than £31.2m. It’s time for Liverpool to decide exactly how ambitious they’re going to be. Are they going to go for the big prizes this season, or are they going to tread water for another year?

Let’s hope that Brendan Rodgers is willing to roll the dice.

What’s your take? Is Isco a good choice for Liverpool?
