DepayFans expected Louis Van Gaal to have an instantly positive impact at Old Trafford, but it just hasn’t worked out that way.

There’s no doubting the Dutchman’s credentials. I’m sure that if he’s given time, he’ll come good soon enough. Manchester United fans simply need to remain as patient as possible, whilst continuing to back their side through thick and thin.

There’s one positive for Manchester United fans: their club has shown a remarkable willingness to throw money at their problems. The Red Devils may not be competing at the top of the Premier League table like in the good old days, but they’re still a force to reckoned with in the transfer market.

Like their new boss, new players like Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao will come good if they’re given time. With this in mind, it wouldn’t surprise me if Louis Van Gaal reached out into the January transfer market to find some new talent. The more he loads the deck in United’s favour, the sooner he’ll start to get results.

This brings me to The Express‘s claim that Manchester United are ‘closing in’ on the purchase of PSV’s wing-wizard, Memphis Depay. With Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young offering diminishing returns (and Nani playing his football for Sporting Lisbon), this could prove to be a smart move.

The aforementioned source suggests that Depay would cost Manchester United as much as £18m. That’s a lot of money, but it’s pittance in comparison to what they spent last summer. They also carry quotes from PSV’s manager, Phillip Cocu, who admits that Depay’s future lies elsewhere:

“Of course Memphis will be sold, you can’t stop that but it’s okay. It’s great you can build up a player like him, who breaks through, succeeds at PSV then leaves the club when he’s ready for a bigger step. That’s great.’

It’s good to see that Cocu is being so philosophical about the situation. There is a certain tinge of inevitability about Memphis Depay’s move to another club. Let’s just hope that he winds up at Old Trafford.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United spend £18m on Memphis Depay?

Immediately after the world cup LVG would have signed Memphis Depay and Bruno Indi from holland. I don’t know why he opted for Marcos Rojo instead of Indi who cost just 6million pounds with Marcos Rojo costing 16million pounds.Memphis Depay has scored 7 goals in 8 matches to replace the fading RVP.
