Ron VlaarIn recent weeks there has been some evidence that Manchester United are re-finding their best form. Of course, there’s a long way still to go, but with Louis Van Gaal in charge and United’s attacking personnel producing the goods, I certainly wouldn’t bet against them. Fans simply need to remain patient and keep backing the team, no matter what bumps occur along the way.

On the way back to their best form, Van Gaal will also need to assess the state of his defense. Whilst The Dutchmen spent big on players like Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao during the summer transfer window, but he didn’t bring in any big defensive names (unless you count Luke Shaw). Having lost both Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic during the summer, this looks like a mistake.

With the January transfer window slowly creeping up on us, United will have the opportunity to re-shape their squad. Unfortunately, there aren’t a lot of good options out there in the middle of the season, but The Red Devils should be able to find somebody who can fill the void in the centre of their defense.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Manchester United are considering making a move for Aston Villa’s star defender (and stand-out performer), Ron Vlaar. This is a deal that actually makes sense on a number of fronts.

Firstly, Vlaar and Van Gaal already know each other as a result of their respective roles in the Dutch international team. What’s more, Vlaar’s Aston Villa contract is coming to an end. At the end of the season he’ll be available as a free transfer. I’m sure that Paul Lambert and co. will be willing to sell him whilst they can still get something out of the deal.

The aforementioned source claims that Concrete Ron could cost as little as £4m. That’s a bargain fee for a player with Premier League experience and real defensive nous. Let’s just hope that Van Gaal sees things the same way.

What’s your take? Is Ron Vlaar the right man for Manchester United? Is he good enough to improve The Red Devils’ defense?

Vlaar is not good enough to play for Manchester United and we should not waste anytime trying to sign him. We already have a good defense with Evans, Rojo, Blackett, McNair, Jones, Smalling – even do Jones and Smalling are weak links and we should look to offload them and find strong defenders (not Vlaar).
