HiguainI think it’s fair to say that Liverpool fans are already getting a little sick of Mario Balotelli. When he arrived, he did so among a wave of good feeling. Unfortunately, things have gone sour pretty quickly.

His goal-scoring form has been non-existent. He spurns chances when he should be providing opportunities to his team-mates. He’s selfish. He makes bad decisions.

The shirt-swapping fiasco is a silly thing to get worked up about really, but his form has made him an easy target.

I think it’s fair to say that Liverpool are missing Daniel Sturridge. The English centre-forward has it all: pace, technical ability and goal-scoring nous. Liverpool need to make sure that they’ve got better options to fill in for Danny when he’s out injured. Brendan Rodgers just can’t afford to be so reliant on one player.

As it happens, it looks like he’s working hard to try and re-work his shoddy attack. The Metro even go as far as to claim that Liverpool are ‘closing in on’ Napoli’s superstar striker, Gonzalo Higuain. They suggest that a £31.2m deal could be on the cards.

This would be another mammoth deal after a summer when The Reds spent a lot of money. It would be another serious statement of intent.

It’s easy enough to see what Gonzalo Higuain would offer this Liverpool side. In 264 appearances for Real Madrid, he found the back of the net 122 times. Since moving to Napoli last summer he’s made 55 appearances, scored 27 goals and has chipped in with 16 assists. He’s seriously effective in the final third.

Unfortunately for Higuain, Napoli are having a pretty torrid time at the moment. They failed to qualify for the Champions League this season and they’re only 7th in the Serie A table. It wouldn’t surprise me if the Argentine ace was on the hunt for an exit route.

Either way, he’s a player that’s worth pursuing. He’s a better option than Mario Balotelli and he could held to fire The Reds to future successes. Let’s hope so anyway.

What’s your take? Should Liverpool attempt to wrap up a deal for Gonzalo Higuain?

You say this just as the fans get renewed optimism from the goal he scored against Swansea, which by the way have come off the back of 2 quite good, hard working performances…
