Would this £9m man be a good replacement for Hugo Lloris?

ali ahamadaIt comes to something when your star man is goalkeeper. Whilst all the best sides have a world-class goalkeeper, if he’s standing out above other team-members then there’s clearly something very wrong.

It strikes me that this is the case at Tottenham at the moment. In the shape of Hugo Lloris, they’ve got one of the best goalkeepers in the world. He’s such a lively presence – quick off the line, a smart decision maker and an excellent shot-stopper. He’s also a commanding presence. He’s not afraid to shout at his defenders, or organise them exactly as he likes. In this regard, he’s proven to be remarkably effective.

It’s just a shame that so many of Tottenham’s other players are failing to produce the goods. If Spurs had players of a similar quality in other positions, they’d provide a lot more threat for Premier League competition. I have little doubt that they’d be able to qualify for the Champions League, at the very least.

This brings me to the disappointing news that Spurs have already resigned themselves ‘to selling Hugo Lloris’. Spurs fans won’t want to let him go, but it looks like they may not have a choice in the matter.

According to The Metro, Spurs had to bat-back several enquirers for the Frenchman during the summer. It looks like there are more to come this January and that the Tottenham hierarchy may not be able to stop a deal from happening.

Luckily, the aforementioned source also claims that Tottenham are working hard to find a replacement. The man they’re looking to bring in is Toulouse’s highly regarded shot-stopper, Ali Ahamada. The 23-year-old could cost Mauricio Pochettino and co. £9m. That’s a fairly hefty fee for a goalkeeper, but Ahamada looks like a good choice.

He could actually be Hugo Lloris’s long-term replacement in the French international team. As such, it makes sense that Spurs are interested. With other 104 appearances for Toulouse to his name, he’s probably ready for a new challenge. Let’s just hope that he answers when Spurs come knocking.

What’s your take? Can Spurs afford to lose Hugo Lloris? Is Ali Ahamada a good replacement?
