Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (Schalke)We’re smack-bang in the middle of an international break, but Arsenal fans are still probably licking their wounds following yet another defeat from a Jose Mourinho side. The Special One seems to have Arsene Wenger’s number. Try as they did, The Gunners couldn’t break Chelsea down and they inevitably conceded a couple of counter-attacking goals.

As you might expect, pundits have started to roll out the usual platitudes: ‘Arsenal can’t beat the top teams’. ‘Arsenal have a soft centre’. ‘Arsenal are defensively weak’. I can’t be the only one whose tired of hearing the same old complaints, but there’s certainly a hint of truth about them all.

I can’t help but feel that Arsenal would be more effective if they had a more impressive focal point to their attack. Just look at how much better Chelsea have been since acquiring Diego Costa. They’re now Premier League title favourites and it’s hard to see anybody stopping them.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that The Gunners are in the market to sign Schalke 04’s experienced centre-forward, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar. If their interest is genuine, they’ll have to battle Liverpool and Tottenham for is signature, two other clubs with a desperate need for more options upfront.

At 31-years-old, The Dutchman is no spring chicken. But he’s a level-headed veteran of the game now and he’s got one hell of a goal-scoring record. At Schalke 04 he’s scored 95 goals in 45 games and he’s showing no signs of losing his touch.

Why hasn’t he been brought to the Premier League earlier? With his physique and goal-scoring nous, he’s the perfect fit. The aforementioned source claims that Klaas-Jan Huntelaar could be available for as little as £3m when the transfer window re-opens.

That’s a bargain fee for a player with such a big reputation. He’s not the most sprightly or pacey individual, but he could do a good job for Arsenal. He could even help them to compete in big games. With that in mind, I’d argue that he’s worth pursuing.

What’s your take? Is Klaas-Jan Huntelaar a good option for The Gunners?
