Should Manchester United battle Arsenal for this Premier League ace?

|

Winston ReidWith Manchester United on the hunt for new defensive personnel, they’re likely to get linked to a number of different players between now and the run up to the January transfer window. What’s more, given that Arsenal are in a similar position, The Red Devils are likely to run up against the North London club during the recruitment process.

Both teams spent big on their attack during the summer and neglected their defense. Both teams will be looking to atone for this error in judgement when the transfer window re-opens.

This brings me to The Express‘s claim that both Manchester United and Arsenal are on ‘red alert’ following recent comments made about the lack of progress in Winston Reid’s contract talks with West Ham.

With less than a year left on his current deal, Reid will be available as a free transfer from next summer. Alternatively, clubs could attempt to snap him up this January on the cheap. It certainly wouldn’t surprise me to see either The Red Devils or The Gunners swoop in.

Both clubs will be heartened to see a West Ham spokesman claim that Winston Reid is no closer to agreeing a new deal with his current club. Here’s what he had to say: “We are trying to meet his agent but he seems in no hurry to meet us.”

Could his agent be too busy trying to find a new club for his talented charge? Could Manchester United be one of those clubs?

This is all speculation of course, but I hope that The Red Devils are in the mix. They’re in even greater need of new defensive recruits than Arsenal, and they have a bigger and better reputation to uphold. They also seemingly have money to burn, so they should be able to offer The Hammers a decent sum of cash for their player, despite his contractual situation.

Either way, let’s hope that Winston Reid’s agent is a lot more attentive when Manchester United come knocking.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United take on Arsenal and West Ham in a battle to sign Winston Reid?
