Is Louis Van Gaal to blame for Manchester United’s defensive crisis?

Van GaalNow that the season is well and truly underway and we’ve had an opportunity to see most of the Premier League’s new recruits in action, we’re in a better position to asses who spent well and who spent poorly.

Whilst Chelsea’s new additions have accelerated the club’s growth and has arguably made them title favourites, clubs like Arsenal and Manchester United are still struggling. Both sides brought in a wealth of attacking talent, but failed to provide their squads with the balance necessary to compete on multiple fronts.

Unfortunately for Arsene Wenger and Louis Van Gaal, their teams are already being found out. Last time we saw them in action, The Gunners scrapped a draw against a weak Spurs side and Manchester United struggled to beat West Ham. Things aren’t looking particularly good for either side.

This brings me to Ruud Gullit’s recent comments about Manchester United and Louis Van Gaal. The Dutchman really wasn’t in a mood to hold back. Check them out here:

“How on earth is it possible that such an experienced and successful manager thought he could start the season at Man United without buying a couple of really strong central defenders? I am still amazed by his buying and his transfers. If you only strengthen the midfield and the attack, than you are underestimating the level and the power of the Premier League.” (Source: The Metro)

Unfortunately, Gullit is spot on. You can’t let go of players like Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, experienced Premier League defenders, without bringing in decent replacements.

I’m sure Louis Van Gaal will note that there’s no way he could have foreseen his club’s current injury crisis, but that doesn’t mean he shouldn’t have prepared for it. A club like Manchester United should be competitive, no matter what the circumstances. At the moment, however, their defense is seriously letting them down.

AS Gullit says: “if you have so many injuries and you have not bought the defenders, then you are doing something wrong at your club.”

Ouch. Van Gaal’s start at Old Trafford has not been all that impressive thus far. He may well have to wait until the January transfer window if he’s to turn things around.

What’s your take? What do you make of Louis Van Gaal thus far? Is he the right man for Manchester United?
