Liverpool were linked to a wide variety of players last summer and they actually managed to snap most of them up. One man they didn’t manage to sign, however, was Paris Saint Germain’s well regarded forward, Ezequiel Lavezzi. Would he have been a smart addition to Brendan Rodger’s already impressive looking side?
It looks like a deal for the Argentine ace could still be on. The Express claim that Liverpool are still one of a number of clubs, including Inter Milan, Fiorentina and Atletico Madrid, who are interested in Lavezzi. Perhaps this January will provide Brendan Rodgers with an opportunity to close the deal?
It certainly looks like a smart move. Without Daniel Sturridge in their squad (thanks to an injury he picked up whilst on international duty), The Reds look a little toothless. They can call upon Rickie Lambert, Fabio Borini and Mario Balotelli, but the first two lack the quality necessary at the very top level of the game, whilst Balotelli is still adapting to his new surroundings.
Since moving to PSG two seasons ago, Lavezzi has proven to be quietly effective. In 2012/13 he scored 11 goals and made 8 assists. Last season he scored 12 goals and made 10 assists. I wonder if he’ll improve his tally this time around? Either way, it’s easy enough to see what he’d add to this Liverpool side.
As The Express note, Lavezzi’s contract is set to expire in the summer of 2016. With no route into the first team (he’d have to jump ahead of Zlatan Ibrahimovic or Edinson Cavani if he wants regular football in Paris) his club may well consider selling whilst they can still get good value from him.
Interestingly enough, The Express suggest that Liverpool ‘could’ snap him up on a free. This would require that they wait a further two years before signing him. Just what are they smoking over at that particular publication?
Either way, I hope Brendan Rodgers manages to get his hands on Ezequiel Lavezzi. He’s a top drawer footballer and The Reds need options.
