Diego LuganoAfter Arsenal’s lackluster mid-week performance against Borussia Dortmund, it’s clear that they have some major issues throughout their squad.

There have been concerns about their defense from the start of the season, but the truth is that The Gunners have also offered very little moving forward.

Alexis Sanchez can finish, but his passing has been naff to say the least. Mesut Ozil has continued to offer the same poor performances he did last year. Santi Cazorla seems to drift in and out of games. Aaron Ramsey doesn’t seem to be half as effective as he has been for the last 12 months. When you’ve got so many players offering diminishing returns, it’s not surprising that the club should struggle.

To be fair, things are even worse in defensive positions. The fact that youngster Hector Bellerin was given a start against a big side like Borussia Dortmund says it all. Arsenal are really running out of options in defensive positions.

With Mathieu Debuchy out with a long-term injury, Nacho Monreal and Calum Chambers unwell and Kieran Gibbs a constant injury doubt, Arsene Wenger has plenty of cause for concern. Arsenal fans are well within their right to question why their side didn’t bring in some more cover during the transfer window.

It now looks like a mad decision.

Interestingly, The Metro claim that Arsenal are now considering snapping up a free agent to help them contend with their current defensive crisis. They list players like Andrea Dossena, Abdoulaye Faye, George McCartney, Joseph Yobo, Diego Lugano, Oguchi Onyewu, and Anthony Reveillere.

Surely one of those options could do a job for The Gunners? Maybe an experienced individual like Diego Lugano (who is captain of the Uruguayan national football team no less) could help. He may not have been a hit at West Brom, but desperate times call for desperate measures.

One way or another, Arsenal have to do something. Bringing in a free agent is a relatively inexperienced gamble. At this stage, it’s starting to look like the right move.

What’s your take? Which freebie signings should The Gunners consider making?
