Were Arsenal right to snub Micah Richards?

Micah Richards (Manchester City)The transfer window has been closed for something approaching two weeks now, so it’s good time to start assessing the signings that were made. I think it’s fair to say that some clubs have done slightly better than others when it comes to their summer business.

Let’s take Arsenal, for instance. Most fans would agree that The Gunners have had a good summer overall. Arsene Wenger has brought in some top talent. Players like Alexis Sanchez, Calum Chambers, Mathieu Debuchy and Danny Welbeck are all certain to have an impact over the course of this season. They’re too good not to.

But The Professor has left one area of his squad woefully short of options: his defense. In fact, as things currently stand, The Gunners have just six quality first team defenders: Laurent Koscielny, Per Mertesacker, Calum Chambers, Mathieu Debuchy, Nacho Monreal and Kieran Gibbs.

If they lose two or three players to injury, they’re going to be in real trouble.

With this in mind, what are we to make of the The Metro‘s claim that Arsene Wenger turned down an opportunity to sign Manchester City right-back, Micah Richards?

Now I know what you’ll say – Arsene Wenger did sign two right backs this summer (Chambers and Debuchy). It would have been bizarre for him to have signed a third.

Still, The Metro claim that the reason Wenger didn’t sign Richards was because he preferred Calum Chambers. So why then does he keep suggesting that he sees the former Southampton youngster is a centre-back?

Let’s not forget that Micah Richards is a highly versatile individual. He can play as a right-back or as a centre-back. Given the slight nature of The Gunners’ squad, I think it’s fair to say that he would have found a place in the first team, some way, some how.

As such, I can’t help but feel disappointed that Arsenal didn’t maintain their interest in Micah Richards (a self-professed Arsenal fan), even after striking a deal for Chambers. Instead, the Manchester City star has sealed a loan deal with Serie A side Fiorentina.

Let’s just hope that The Gunners don’t come to regret their decision.

What’s your take? Would Micah Richards have been a smart addition for The Gunners?
