rooneyTwo games with the armband on, two wins. Not a bad start to his reign as England captain for Wayne Rooney then. If we look beyond the criticism the striker has received of late – which could well just be a reaction to an awful World Cup showing from the team – it’s hard to argue against ‘Wazza’ taking over from the now retired Steven Gerrard.

Who was better? Gary Cahill is a solid performer. Joe Hart a decent ‘keeper. But beyond those two there’s little in the way of alternatives and, like it or not, Rooney is the Three Lions’ best player.

It may be silly to suggest that England have a fighting chance of winning EURO 2016 in two years’ time, but with Wayne at his peak now he could well lead a promising band of youngsters into a big tournament and the use it his last crack at an international prize.

Rooney may be a great player, but off of the field he has often been referred to as, let’s put it nicely, not the cleverest of blokes. Darren Farley has grasped this persona for the hilarious Coral ad below…
