Is Ron Vlaar the answer for Manchester United?

VlaarBoth Arsenal and Manchester United are in a precarious position when it comes to their defense. Neither Arsene Wenger, or Louis Van Gaal spent enough on their defense during the summer (despite making a number of impressive attacking additions to their squad). Both squads are now facing the consequences of their distinct lack of proper priorities.

Whilst you could argue that The Gunners and The Red Devils have been unlucky with injuries, I can’t help but feel that big clubs need to guard against these kind of issues. Teams like Manchester City and Chelsea have depth in each and every area of their squad. If Arsenal and United want to compete, they may well need to match them.

The January transfer window is still some way away, but it will provide Arsenal and Manchester United with a lifeline. Once it arrives, both clubs will be able to reach out and snap up some new defensive talent. God knows they need it.

Interestingly enough, both clubs have been linked to Aston Villa’s talented centre-back, Ron Vlaar. Could ‘Concrete Ron’ be the solution to one of these club’s woes?

He’d probably be a better fit for Manchester United. After all, he knows Louis Van Gaal pretty well from their time together in the Dutch international team. I’d also argue that there’s an easier route to the first team at Old Trafford (if he were to move to The Emirates, he’d have to battle his way past Per Mertesacker or Laurent Koscielny).

Unfortunately it won’t be too easy for United to wrap this deal up. The Metro claim that Aston Villa are keen to tie Ron Vlaar down to a new long-term deal. If they manage to tie him down for a few more years, they’ll be in a position of real power when it comes to negotiating.

So let’s hope that Manchester United act fast and make their interest clear. Ron Vlaar is the real deal and he could be exactly what they need.

What’s your take? Is Ron Vlaar the answer for The Red Devils?
