Why Spurs NEED to wrap up this £15m deal:

I think it’s fair to say that Tottenham’s summer transfer business has failed to get fans fired up – not yet any way. Whilst their North London rivals – Arsenal – have snapped up a big name, Alexis Sanchez, Spurs have been comparatively quiet.

Spurs have signed Ben Davies (sending Gylfi Sigurdsson, a good squad player, in the other direction), Michel Vorm, Eric Dier and DeAndre Yedlin. Whilst all of these players will have a role to play over the coming season, there’s not much to get excited about here.

But things could be about to change. The Metro recently ran an article that suggested Spurs are moving close to agreeing a deal for PSV star Memphis Depay. The Dutch winger has bags of ability and looks set to hit the big time at some stage in his career.

This could be the signing that Spurs thought they were making when they brought in Erik Lamela. Depay’s really highly regarded in Dutch football, with some even labeling him the ‘new Cristiano Ronaldo’. That’s high praise, but there’s no doubting his potential.

In 87 appearances for PSV, Depay has found the back of the net 27 times. That’s a great return for a winger, especially one that’s only 20-years-old. If he continues to improve over the coming season, he could develop into a genuine footballing great.

It strikes me that this is exactly the kind of signing that Spurs need to make this summer. As it happens, it looks like Mauricio Pochettino is keen to wrap this one up. The Metro claim that he’s already made a £15m bid for the winger. What’s more, Depay has turned down offers of a new contract at PSV. It looks like things are coming to a head here.

After starting the season off on an uncertain foot, bringing Depay in would be an opportunity to steady the ship, add a little dash of confidence to the side and build on last season’s performances. Let’s just hope that Pochettino is able to wrap up the first major deal of Tottenham’s summer.
