Are Manchester United really ready to bid for this £100m talent?

DiMariaManchester United’s defeat at the hands of Swansea City shows that they’re still lacking in quality. The arrival of Louis Van Gaal was supposed to herald a new age, but The Red Devils look trapped in the past.

It strikes me that Manchester United just haven’t made the signings they needed to this summer. They needed to bring in a marquee signing and ideally they needed to do that before the season begun.

This would have given the new recruit an opportunity to gel with his new team-mates. As it happens, however, The Red Devils seem to be leaving things a little late.

Let’s just hope that Van Gaal and co. haven’t left things too late. There are still good options out there.

Take Manchester United’s continued rumoured interest in Real Madrid star Angel Di Maria. Wouldn’t this Argentine, who has made 189 appearances for the Spanish powerhouse, improve Van Gaal’s squad significantly?

The Metro claim that Manchester United are ‘ready to spend whatever it takes to land’ Di Maria. The source also carries quotes from Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti, who seems a little uncertain about his player’s future.

“I’m not entering into the issue [with] Di Maria, because I’ll lose focus in the game [against Atletico on Tuesday]. I do not know what he has decided, just know that he is ready to play tomorrow, and until August 31 will be here in principle. If from there he stays or is no longer, we will think about it later.”

The fact that Carlo Ancelotti is unwilling to commit to the player’s long-term future at Real Madrid is probably a good sign for Manchester United. It suggests that there’s something going on behind the scenes that’s clouding Ancelotti’s judgement.

Depressingly, The Metro also suggest that Manchester United are preparing an ‘incredible £100m transfer’ for Di Maria. I certainly hope that this isn’t the case. That would make Di Maria the most pricey player in the entire world. That would make him more expensive than Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and James Rodriguez.

Let’s just hope that Louis Van Gaal and co. are able to negotiate Real Madrid down to a more sensible price.

What’s your take? Can Manchester United afford to compete for Angel Di Maria?
