After a gloomy season, things are finally starting to look up for Spurs again. They’ve just given Celtic a right walloping in a pre-season friendly (6-1!) and new boss Mauricio Pochettino has already made a few astute signings.
Ben Davies, Michel Vorm and Eric Dier all look like decent additions to this Tottenham squad, but you get the sense that there are bigger deals yet to come. Let’s hope so any way.
This brings me to The Mirror‘s claim that Spurs are planning a £45m double swoop for Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin and for Swansea City’s Wilfried Bony. This is yet more cause for Spurs fans to get excited.
We’ve already heard a lot about Tottenham’s interest in Morgan Schneiderlin. The Saints’ holding midfielder has Premier League experience, plenty of class and some real wit and verve about his game. If Spurs are looking to add some bite to their midfield, he’d prove to be an excellent choice.
But he won’t come cheap. Southampton are playing hard-ball over his sale and are said to value him at as much as £27m. That’s as much as Manchester United had to pay for Luke Shaw, which shows how highly regarded the French ace is at St Mary’s.
Then there’s Wilfried Bony, a striker who can more or less guarantee his side goals. He scored 15 goals for Swansea City last year and that was in his first season on English soil. If he continues to improve, he’ll be a truly fearsome presence next year. Again, it’s easy to see why Spurs might be interested.
Whether Daniel Levy and co. really do have £45m left to spend remains to be seen, but there’s little doubt that these two targets will improve the squad significantly. If Spurs are aiming for a Champions League slot next season, then they seem to be heading in the right direction. Let’s just hope that they have enough money to get there.
