Arsenal close in on £5.6m deal: time to celebrate?

Adrien RabiotArsenal look to be close to sealing one of the strangest signings of their summer.

Sure, the addition of Southampton’s right-back, Calum Chambers, looked odd at the time, but he’s already managed to make an impact within this team. He’s fit in extremely well as an emergency centre-back and looks like he has a big future at the club.

It’s not so easy to see where Arsenal’s most recent transfer target might fit in.

The player I’m referring to is  Paris Saint Germain’s young midfielder, Adrien Rabiot. Do The Gunners really need to add another attacking minded youngster to their squad? Aren’t they already spoiled for choice in this department?

First things first: there’s no doubting Rabiot’s ability. At only 19-years-old, he has a huge amount of confidence on the ball. He’s got quick feet, he makes good decisions and he has certainly got an eye for a pass. In many ways, he looks like a quintessential Arsenal player. If he is given a proper chance at The Emirates I’m sure that he’d find some level of success.

Maybe that’s why The Metro are reporting that Arsenal have offered Rabiot a ‘huge contract’, in order to fend of interest from Roma. The source also suggests that Arsenal have already had a £5.6m bid accepted by PSG. He doesn’t strike me as a necessary signing, but at least he won’t break the bank.

This deal would be a lot more exciting if Arsenal didn’t already have so many viable options in this department. To earn a role in the first team, Adrien Rabiot is going to have to battle his way part Mesut Ozil, Aaron Ramsey, Santi Cazorla, Mikel Arteta, Jack Wilshere, Tomas Rosicky, Abou Diaby and others. It’s an absolutely mammoth challenge for a young player.

He wasn’t a regular first team player at Paris Saint Germain and that unlikely to change at The Emirates. Lets just hope that he’s willing to be patient and bide his time. This is a signing that could prove to be beneficial in the long-run, even if it fails to provide results in the short-term.

What’s your take? Do Arsenal really need to sign Adrien Rabiot?

One big issue with the article: Rabiot is a DEFENSIVE midfielder so the reason of his signing is obvious since, Vermaelen replacement aside, this is where the team needs reinforcement the most.
Chambers and Rabiot would be the backbone of the defence be midfield for the years, soon replacing the aging Arteta & Flamini who won’t have more than a couple of seasons left in their legs at this level.
