Serge GnabryOne of the bright spots of Arsenal’s previous season was the rise to prominence of German prodigy, Serge Gnabry. The fleet-footed winger broke into the first team, got some decent game-time and started to catch a few pundit’s eyes.

Let’s not forget that he’s only 19-years-old. The fact that we’re even discussing him at this stage is very impressive indeed. The Gunners could have a Raheem Sterling level talent on their hands if they play their cards right. Arsene Wenger just needs to be careful with the way that he manages his development.

Last year Gnabry made 14 appearances for The Gunners and managed to nab his first senior goal, against Swansea City back in September. That goal capped off a fine performance where his direct running, pace and technique caused The Swans all kinds of difficulties.

I’m sure that Wenger and the player himself will want to see some improvement on what he achieved last season. He’ll want to accrue more Premier League game-time and maybe a couple more goals this time round.

But as things currently stand, it’s not clear that he can do this at Arsenal. His route to the first team could well be blocked. After all, Theo Walcott is on the way to recovery and Alexis Sanchez has just been brought through the door. Is there space for Gnabry at the Emirates?

This brings me to The Mirror‘s claim that Newcastle manager Alan Pardew is a fan of the German youngster and that he wants to bring Gnabry to St James’ Park on a season long loan. The source also notes that Southampton and Sunderland are interested.

I can’t help but feel that a season long loan is exactly what Serge Gnabry needs at this moment in time. More precisely, he needs regular football, so this should be factored into any decision regarding his future.

It’s not clear that he’d be a first-teamer at Newcastle. Sunderland may not be the best match for his playing style. Southampton on the other hand… a perfect fit.

They’ve sold all their best players and they’re known for their free-flowing attacking football. A loan move to St Marys could prove to be ideal.

Either way, it’ll be interesting to watch as Serge Gnabry continues to develop. Let’s just hope that he manages to achieve his potential with Arsenal.

What’s your take? What does the future hold for Serge Gnabry?
