Should Arsenal wrap up a £20m deal for this World Cup flop?

BernardAfter having seen this Brazilian side get turned over by a ruthlessly efficient German side, I’m sure that Arsenal fans won’t be overly-excited to see their club get linked to one of Luiz Felipe Scolari’s boys. Getting beaten 7-1 tends to reflect quite badly on your reputation.

After that particular game, many pundits started talking about how some Brazilian players might never bounce back again. The suggestion is that this set of players have been so chastened that they might never fully recover. Codswallop, I say!

It was a bad day at the office for which Scolari deserves his fair share of the blame. The result should act as a reminder for this Brazilian side of the importance of hard-work and organisation.

Are we really supposed to believe that talented young players like Bernard are now only fit for the international football scrapheap? The 20-year-old was one of Brazil’s worst performers last Tuesday, but he’s surely got enough about his game to save his career?

This brings me back to that Arsenal link. According to The Mirror, Arsene Wenger is keen to add Bernard to his talented attacking options this summer. The source notes that he’s keen to leave Shakhtar Donetsk and that he currently has a price-tag of around £20m.

That’s a lot of money, but given the commercial deals The Gunners have been signing in recent times, his price-tag wont price them out of the market. If Arsene Wenger really is interested, there’s no reason why he can’t wrap this one up.

At just 20-years-old, Bernard is already inordinately talented. He’s great on the ball, loves to take players on and he’s deadly in the final third. If any manager in world football can rejuvenate him following Brazil’s humiliating defeat, it’s Arsene Wenger. In this sense, Arsenal may be a good fit for Bernard.

Let’s not forget that The Gunners are a club that focus on free-flowing attacking football. Signing players like Bernard just seems to make sense.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal make a move for this World Cup flop?
