Are Manchester United finally set to wrap up this £48m deal?

Edinson Cavani Manchester United have been linked to Paris Saint Germain’s superstar striker Edinson Cavani for quite some time, but things now finally appear to be heating up. Could a deal be on the cards?

According to The Metro, United are in ‘fresh talks’ with the players agent and are currently negotiating around his wage demands. The source suggests that The Red Devils are inquiring as to whether he’d be willing to accept a slight pay-cut.

I have to say, I find the potential of that happening somewhat unlikely. Why would he take a pay-cut when he’s currently at the peak of his game, scoring goals for fun and attracting attention from clubs across Europe?

Cavani (and his agent) will also be aware of Manchester United’s current financial situation. The Red Devils have bag-loads of cash to spend this summer (and on-going, thanks to their recent £750m kit deal). They can afford to pay Edinson Cavani what he’s currently on at PSG.

It’s also worth noting that PSG would demand Manchester United pay a huge transfer fee for Cavani. Having only been at the club for 12 months, they’ll probably want to recoup 100% of the £48m they paid for him last summer.

Bringing in another striker could prove to be a smart move. Robin Van Persie is getting on in years and he’s a constant injury doubt. Wayne Rooney is highly inconsistent (and seems to have lost his passion over the last year or so). Javier Hernandez seems to be keen to move on. Then there’s Danny Welbeck, who’s a little goal-shy.

Cavani would certainly add plenty of threat to Manchester United’s forward line. Whilst at Napoli he scored a staggering 104 goals in 138 games. Last season at PSG, he found the back of the net 25 times in 43 games. The man’s a force of nature. With that in mind, maybe Manchester United should be prepared to go all out on his wages?

Whilst Louis Van Gaal should probably focus on fixing his defense, a signing like this could pump belief back into the club. I’ll certainly be keeping my fingers crossed.

What’s your take? Should The Red Devils finally wrap up this big-money deal for Edinson Cavani?

I agree. In fact I would go as far as to offer Rooney in part exchange. This solves the captaincy problem, the number ten problem and the cry-baby-always-throwing-his-toys-out-of-the-pram-when-things-are-not-going-his-way problem. Sounds like a solution to me!
