Jackson MartinezWhilst Arsenal have been slow to react in the transfer market, they’re going to have to spring into action eventually.

It’s clear to just about everybody that they need to sign a world-class centre-forward this summer. Olivier Giroud, their lumpy, hard-working and somewhat effective French striker has done a decent job, but he’s also a little inconsistent and he’s quick to tire.

He’s not really the kind of striker that you can build a meaningful title-charge on. Adding another option to The Gunners forward line-up would add competition and depth to the squad. It looks like the smart move.

This brings me to the comments of one of Arsenal’s key summer transfer targets, Jackson Martinez. The goal-scoring Colombian ace recently spoke out about his future and his links to Arsenal. Here’s what he had to say:

“I know that there have been discussions, but still no agreements. My agent is taking care of my future, right now I’m at the World Cup and only after the World Cup I’ll evaluate proposals. As a child I cheered for Arsenal, they play a game that suits me. If I had the occasion to play there, I would say yes.” (Source: The Mirror)

His comments will be music to Arsenal fan’s ears. After all, Jackson Martinez is a deadly force in front of goal. In 91 games for FC Porto, he’s scored a startling 60 goals.

Whilst he’s big and strong like Olivier Giroud, he’s also fairly pacey and is better at getting in behind defenses. He’s also a better finisher (clearly).

The Metro recently ran an article suggesting that FC Porto want £35m for Martinez, whilst Arsene Wenger is trying to negotiate his price-tag down to £20m. If the two clubs can meet in the middle, then they might both be onto a winner. FC Porto will get plenty of cash to spend on a replacement, whilst The Gunners will have that world-class striker they desperately need.

Make it happen Arsene!

What’s your take? Is Jackson Martinez the right choice for The Gunners? Who else should they consider?
