Will Liverpool come to regret missing out on this £10m talent?

|

Ben Davies Before selling Luis Suarez, Brendan Rodger’s main task during the summer transfer window was bolstering his defense. Whilst his priorities will now have changed, he’ll still need to bring in some defensive personnel to help provide balance to his team.

Liverpool conceded 50 Premier League goals last season. This is an issue they clearly need to deal with. Luis Suarez’s exit will have muddied the waters somewhat, but Rodgers won’t be oblivious to the facts – let’s hope not anyway.

This brings me to Liverpool’s interest in Swansea City’s star left-back, Ben Davies. It strikes me that Davies is a player who could add something to this Liverpool team both from a defensive and an attacking point of view. The best of both worlds!

The Mirror recently reported that Spurs have had a £10m offer accepted for the flying full-back. The BBC suggest that Davies has left The Swans US Pre-season tour for a medical with Spurs. In other words, it already looks too late for Liverpool.

This strikes me as a little odd. After all, The Reds are in a fairly strong position. They know what it would take to convince The Swans to sell (£10m). They also know that they’re able to offer Davies Champions League action, unlike Spurs. Liverpool are also beginning to look like a silverware winning side, so should have more to offer than Tottenham.

The Mirror have even reported that ‘Davies is keen to see what Rodgers and Co. have to offer’. So why is he having a medical at Spurs and not with The Reds?

Perhaps Brendan Rodgers waited too long to see if any other players were available before sealing the deal. Either way, it’s clear that the Welshman would have made an excellent addition to this Liverpool side. He’s nippy, he’s smart and he’s effective. I can’t help but feel that The Reds will come to regret missing out on this particular target.

Let’s just hope that Brendan Rodgers has a list of other targets in mind this summer. The Reds need to bring in two-or-three more players to maintain competitiveness. Davies would have been a good fit, but there are other fish in the sea.

What’s your take? Is Ben Davies the right man for Liverpool?

Brendan Rodgers was only keen on Davies as a squad player and to fight for his first team place. Unless that changes over the next 48 hours then I can’t see Liverpool signing him. Rodgers is so smitten with Lovren that is the only deal he is absolutely desperate to wrap up, any other linked players are not high on his agenda. That said, once Lovren is signed, Rodgers may turn his attentions and commitment to other targets, but as it stands, he is only pressing the club to sign to Lovren. There are players who fit the criteria for the club, where there is say 2,3 or even 4 in a pool who he wants to sign, ie, if one is not possible, or too much money then they move onto the next. Remy is a prime example of this, he was on a list of three… Remy, Bony, Rodriguez – all three are assessed based on their desire, their commitment, their price etc. Bony proving to be the cheapest. Then there are players who Rodgers wants desperately, these are in a list of one – Sanchez was one of these, as too was Markovic – one got away, the other did’nt. Origi is also in a list of 1, Rodgers is desperate to sign him. Davies is not in a list of 1, there are other more pressing targets who Rodgers is keen for.
