Whilst Arsenal’s main priority this summer will be signing a top class striker, it wouldn’t surprise me if Arsene Wenger got somewhat distracted. He seems to favour crafty, attacking minded midfielders above all else. Remember how The Gunners needed a striker last summer but ended up spending £42.5m on Mesut Ozil?
Who’s to say that this won’t happen again? Who’s to say that Arsene Wenger has his priorities right?
If The Mirror is to be believed, Arsenal are ready to pull off a French double this summer. The source claims that Arsene Wenger is in the market for two midfielders, Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin and Lyon’s Clement Grenier.
That’s right, Arsenal are doubling down on the crazy, by chasing not one, but two midfielders. If Arsene does sign Schniederlin and Grenier, they’ll be competing with Mesut Ozil, Aaron Ramsey, Santi Cazorla, Jack Wilshere, Mathieu Flamini, Tomas Rosicky, Mikel Arteta and more.
Arsenal are already spoiled for choice. Pursuing this French duo strikes me as a little odd.
But nobody knows French talent quite like Arsene Wenger. If he rates these two, then it’s because they’re quality options. If he’s willing to sign them, it’s because he believes that they’ll be able to make a mark at The Emirates.
Of the two, Schneiderlin looks like the best option. The defensive-minded midfielder is a diligent presence, who works hard, makes bag-loads of tackles and interceptions every game and also manages to contribute meaningfully to Southampton’s attack.
With Arsenal’s current defensive midfielders (Arteta and Flamini) getting on in years, bringing Schneiderlin in could prove to be an astute decision.
Grenier, at 23-years-old, is a more exciting, more attacking option. He’s great on the ball, has excellent technical ability and can take a mean free kick. In other words, he’d be a perfect fit at Arsenal. With Newcastle looking at him as a potential replacement for Yohan Cabaye, Arsene Wenger will have to act quickly.
Arsenal don’t exactly need to make two additions to their midfield this summer, but if they bring in this dynamic duo, I’m not sure too many fans would complain.
