With Manchester United in desperate need of a little more cut-and-thrust in their midfield, it was only a matter of time before they turned their attention to Arturo Vidal. The little Chilean ace is one of the best midfielders in world football, so it’s only natural that The Red Devils would be interested.
According to The Mirror, new Manchester United boss Louis Van Gaal is a big fan of Vidal. They suggest that a £40m transfer could be on the cards this summer. They even carry quotes from Van Gaal who speaks of his admiration for the player:
“I always wanted to buy Vidal when he was at Bayer Leverkusen but he went to Juventus.”
Whilst his comments don’t necessarily showcase any real desire to sign the 27-year-old Chilean, they do demonstrate that he’s a player who has been on Van Gaal’s radar for some time. Who’s to say that the Dutchman won’t swoop in this summer, once the World Cup madness is over?
With Juan Mata and Marouane Fellaini both struggling to make their mark at Old Trafford, Arturo Vidal could prove to be the perfect tonic. He’s known in Serie A as ‘the complete midfielder’. He’s got enough energy to play as a box-to-box midfielder and he’s equally capable of contributing defensively as he is offensively.
There are few players out there who have both Vidal’s play-making ability and his tackling ability. That’s why Manchester United are right to be interested in the player.
Vidal made a total of 46 appearances last season. In the end he scored 18 goals and made 6 assists. He’s not just talented, he’s effective too. He’d knock Marouane Fellaini out of this United side without breaking a sweat.
£40m is a lot of money. Signing Vidal would eat up a significant chunk of Manchester United’s transfer budget. But I still can’t help but feel that it would be a smart move. After all, serious change never comes cheap.
