‘He would suit the Liverpool system’: Time for Brendan to make a move?

Cesc Fabregas (Barcelona)Liverpool’s need to find a long-term replacement for Steven Gerrard is growing all the more pressing as the months drift by. Whilst they’ve got young options like Jordan Henderson and Philippe Coutinho blazing a trail at Anfield, I’m not sure that either of them are quite good enough to fill Stevie G’s sizable boots.

But finding a player who is won’t be easy. In fact, it may take a massive investment on the part of the club.

This brings me to Cesc Fabregas, who according to The Mirror, has ‘been told he can leave’ his boyhood club, Barcelona, this summer. There are a number of parties interested in snapping up the Spaniard, including Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City.

I can’t help but feel that Liverpool’s name should also be on that list. Don’t they need a talented midfielder as much as the next club?

That’s certainly Robbie Fowler’s position. Check out these quotes, courtesy of The Mirror: “When those kind of players become available you always want to sign them. Fabregas is a world recognised player and he would suit the Liverpool system.”

Intriguing stuff, eh? I can’t help but feel that Fowler has hit the nail on the head here. I can only imagine how much more effective Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge would be if they were playing in front of Cesc Fabregas. The Spanish maestro is one of the world’s best play-makers and certainly has the quality to ensure that The Reds launch another meaningful title charge next season.

Last season, Cesc Fabregas played 55 games, scored 13 goals and made 22 assists. Steven Gerrard played 39 games, scored 14 goals and made 16 assists. Both players are ruthlessly efficient and it’d certainly be great to see them both play alongside one another.

Of course, even if Barcelona are willing to sell, they won’t be willing to sell cheap. If Liverpool are serious about signing Cesc, they’ll need to be willing to spend big. Whether they are financially capable of this remains to be seen, but I’ll certainly be keeping my fingers crossed. I’m with Robbie on this one.

What’s your take? Should The Reds be interested in signing Cesc Fabregas?
