Pedro (Spain):When Louis Van Gaal starts working his magic in the transfer market, you can bet that he’ll have a talented winger (or two) on his wish list. He’ll have studied the tapes from last season and he’ll be well aware that his current options in this department aren’t good enough.

When Sir Alex Ferguson was in charge, he made sure that Manchester United were an irresistible force moving forward. Unfortunately that isn’t the case any more.

Nani seems to have completely lost his way. Antonio Valencia’s form is all over the place. Whilst Ashley Young is still capable of the occasional wonder-goal, he’s also short on confidence. Then there’s players like Shinji Kagawa and Juan Mata, who aren’t really wingers but have been played down the flanks out of necessity. It’s clear that Manchester United need a spring-clean in this department.

This brings me to The Mirror‘s claim that Manchester United are still hot on the trail of Barcelona’s superstar winger, Pedro. The source even carries quotes from the Spaniard which highlights his current mindset:

“I don’t know what will happen with my future. When something has to be decided I will talk to the club and see what happens”.

It’s interesting that Pedro feels he can be so open about his current situation. This is player who has made 268 appearances for Barcelona after all. He’s been at the Nou Camp for seven years now and won’t want to disrespect the club’s hierarchy unless he’s truly uncomfortable with his role in the team.

Perhaps he’s ready for a new challenge. Perhaps he simply wants assurances over his future. Either way, the time looks right for Manchester United to swoop in and start testing the waters. There’s no word as to how much Pedro might cost, but you can bet he won’t come cheap. Still, he’ll provide significantly more threat than Nani and Ashley Young do.

Last season Pedro scored 19 goals in 54 games. He’s more or less at the peak of his game. With that in mind, let’s hope that The Red Devils are ready to swoop in and test Barcelona’s resolve.

What’s your take? Is Pedro a good option for Manchester United?
