Could this £7m ace prove to be a key Arsenal signing?

Willy Caballero (Malaga)Now that Arsenal have lost their FA Cup winning goalkeeper, I’d say it’s about time for Arsene Wenger to start the hunt for a replacement.

Lukasz Fabianski will be a Swansea City player next season and will this be competing for a place with Michel Vorm, rather than Wojciech Szczesny. I wish him the best of luck, but it does leave The Gunners in a rather precarious situation. It may not be a particularly glamorous position, but Arsenal do need a back-up keeper.

More importantly, they need a keeper who can start pushing Szczesny for his first team position. Whilst Fabianski had shown signs of improvement over the last couple of seasons, he still had a certain rashness about his game which meant he was never likely to be Arsenal’s number one for long. If The Gunners are bringing in somebody new this summer, they’ll need to make sure it’s someone who’s there for the long haul.

As such, they’ll need to make sure that whoever they sign is good enough to compete with Szczesny. They’ll also need to be patient and wait for the opportunity to impress. Finding a candidate who fulfills both these criteria may not be easy.

This brings me to The Mirror‘s claim that Arsenal are in the market to sign Malaga’s highly-rated stopper, Willy Caballero. The Argentine ace is now 32-years-old, but he’s probably just enjoyed the best two seasons of his career.

He’s made 117 appearances for Malaga and was even named Goal.com’s La Liga goalkeeper of the year for the 2012/13 season. Quite an honour, I’m sure you’ll agree. Whilst he’s never broken into the Argentina international team, he does have a decent amount of experience at the top level and would surely be a smart addition to The Gunners’ squad.

The Mirror note that Arsenal have a £100m+ transfer kitty (wow!) and that Caballero would cost just £7m. As such, this deal looks like something of a no-brainer. It would deal with The Gunners’ issue and leave plenty of money left over for Wenger to sign a decent striker or two. Full speed ahead!

What’s your take? Should The Gunners snap up Willy Caballero?
