Would this £10m La Liga ace be a good Arsenal signing?

Alex SongWhen Alex Song left Arsenal back in August 2012, it looked like an odd move. The Cameroonian international had worked hard to cement his place in The Gunners first team and it wasn’t clear that he’d earn the same amount of game time once his move to Barcelona had been forced through.

But Song had stars in his eyes. Unfortunately, since moving to the Nou Camp, he’s only made 63 appearances in two seasons. That’s not bad I suppose, but it’s worth noting that many of these were as a subsitute and that he made 88 appearances for The Gunners in his last two seasons at The Emirates.

That’s a serious case of diminishing returns, that’s somewhat less tragic given the inevitability of it. Alex Song was never going to jump ahead of the likes of Sergio Busquets and Javier Mascherano in Barcelona’s pecking order.

Now The Mirror claim that Alex Song is ‘eyeing a return to the Premier League’ and that Barcelona are willing to let him leave this summer. He’s only got a year left on his Barca contract and it looks like he’ll either be sold on the cheap or leave on a Bosman in 12 months time.

But the aforementioned source doesn’t stop there. They also claim that he could be heading back to Arsenal and that he’d cost as little as £10m.

That’s not a bad price for a player with as much Premier League experience as Alex Song. What’s more, it’s clear to me that Arsenal need a little more physical presence in the centre of the park. Unfortunately, I’m not sure that Alex Song is the right man for the job.

He had his shot to make it Arsenal. Arsene Wenger gave him more than enough opportunities. And then, when he was starting to come good, he flew the coup. There’s just no chance that Arsene Wenger will let this particular chicken come home to roost.

The Gunners have been linked to Lars Bender, who’s a seriously dynamic holding midfielder, who’ll provide ample cover in front of the back four. He’s certainly a better option than Alex Song. So let’s hope that Arsene Wenger has his priorities right.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal offer Alex Song another chance?
