Should Arsenal make a move for this Atletico Madrid star?

Diego MadridIf I were to tell you that Arsenal were in the market to sign a ‘Diego’ from Atletico Madrid, I’m sure you’d jump for joy. Could The Gunners really be attempting to sign the star striker who has now scored an incredible 36 goals in 50 games? They certainly need a new striker and Costa certainly fits the bill.

Unfortunately, I’m not referring to that particular Diego. Instead I’m referring to Diego Ribas da Cunha (great name!) a Brazilian football who currently plays for Madrid as an attacking midfielder. Whilst he wouldn’t be quite as an exciting signing as Costa, he has played a role in guiding Atletico to the top of the La Liga table this season.

Diego Simeone’s (another Diego, argh!) team have had a remarkable year with stand-out performers throughout the team. Although he’s only made 13 appearances, Diego has chipped in with two goals and has impressed with his overall contribution. He also scored a wonder goal against Barcelona in a recent game, which is sure to endear him to fans of the Premier League.

The 29-year-old is supremely confident on the ball, has great technique (his Wikipedia profile even highlights that he loves ‘back-heelers’ and ‘overhead kicks’). It’s this flair that could well make him  good fit for The Gunners.

Sure they’ve got plenty of midfield options, but with Kim Kallstrom’s loan deal coming to an end, Tomas Rosicky and Mikel Arteta getting on in years and Abou Diaby permanently injured, perhaps making another addition in this department is a smart move?

Given that he’s on a short-term contract at Atletico and that there are no signs of a new deal on the horizon, he probably won’t break the bank. If The Gunners genuinely are interested and view Diego as a good squad option, I’m sure they’ll be able to close the deal. After all, Madrid are likely to be too busy fighting to keep hold of Costa to concentrate on their other Diego.

What’s your take? Are The Gunners right to hunt for another midfielder? Would this Diego be a good option? Who else should Arsene Wenger consider?
