Should Arsenal snap up this £3.3m blast from the past?

Carlos VelaIt’ll be fascinating to see what Arsene Wenger does this summer. Will he stick with his current personnel and hope that they’re good enough to (seriously) challenge for the title next season? Or will he twist and bring in a raft of world-class footballers who will give The Gunners a head start in the race to the top of the Premier League table?

The likelihood is that he’ll choose a third option. I wouldn’t be surprised if Arsene Wenger went after targets that nobody was expecting him to. He’ll probably be on the hunt for bargains rather than big-money signings and I’m sure he won’t want to get into any bidding wars.

This brings me to The Mirror‘s claim that Arsene Wenger is considering a move for one of his former charges. The player in question is Carlos Vela who spent 7 years with The Gunners between 2005 and 2012. It’s thought that the quick-footed Mexican could be available for just £3.3m, thanks to the buy-back clause written into his contract.

This may not impress too many Arsenal fans, who witnessed a great deal of mediocrity from the tricky winger during his time at the club. He was sold for a reason and it may feel like a step backwards to bring him back.

There’s certainly no point dwelling in the past. Carlos Vela certainly hasn’t been. Since leaving The Emirates, the Mexican ace has gone from strength to strength. Last season he scored 14 goals and helped to guide Real Sociedad to fourth place in the La Liga table. This year he’s managed to grab 20 goals and 14 assists (statistically speaking, he’s not that far away from Gareth Bale).

When Vela was asked whether he’d entertain a move back to The Emirates, he responded as follows: “I look at things differently these days and I won’t close the door on Arsenal, or any team in England. I think I’m better prepared to play in another country now.”

If he’s really available for just £3.3m, it would be foolish for Arsenal to turn him down. It may not be a move that too many Arsenal fans expect, but it’d certainly be a good one.

What’s your take? Should The Gunners bring Carlos Vela back to the club?
