Could Liverpool really be in the market for James Milner?

James MilnerAfter a great season, Liverpool will be looking to improve during the summer transfer market. With the astute Brendan Rodgers in charge, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them come back even stronger next year.

If they’re to pull this feat off, however, they’ll need to make at least two key additions. They’ll need to sign another defender (or two) and they’ll need to add a little more threat down the flanks.

Brendan tried to fix that area by bringing in Victor Moses on loan last summer. I think it’s fair to say that he hasn’t quite been up to the task. The Chelsea wing-man has made 22 appearances for The Reds this season, only scoring 2 goals. It’s time to look elsewhere.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that The Reds are interested in Manchester City outcast, James Milner. When I first read this story, I can’t help but smirk, but the more I think about the link, the more it seems to make sense. Milner’s often the subject of a lot of unfair criticism but it’s clear he’s a handy player.

You don’t get 45 caps for England by accident. You don’t survive (and continue to get game time) at Manchester City without having something special about your game. Yes, Milner is primarily known for his diligent approach to the game, but that’s nothing to turn your nose up at. Liverpool fans stuck by Dirk Kuyt for a long time, after all.

It’s also worth noting that Milner is fairly talented for an English player, has bags of pace and isn’t afraid to get his head down and run at people. He has the kind of flair that Victor Moses lacks. What’s more, he’s got bag-loads of Premier League experience. He’s the kind of footballer who could turn up at Anfield and make an instant impact.

The aforementioned source claims that Milner is willing to run down his City contract if he doesn’t get the move he desires. With Brendan Rodger’s love of the best of British, who’s to say that he won’t move in for Milner this summer? It’d be an odd move, but it could prove to be a smart one for both parties.

What’s your take? Is James Milner a good fit for Liverpool?
