Should Manchester United offer this German ace £260k-a-week?

Toni Kroos 2When things were going badly during the first half of the season, David Moyes responded by signing Juan Mata, Chelsea’s supremely gifted play-maker. As things haven’t improved too much, I can’t help but wonder if he’ll make a similar purchase in the summer transfer market.

Juan Mata is starting to make an impact at Old Trafford, but it’s still clear that Manchester United need a little more cut-and-thrust in this department. They’ve got one of the best strike-forces in world football, but their sluggish midfield just doesn’t provide them with the service that the likes of Robin Van Persie and Wayne Rooney need to excel.

It’s frustrating to see Rooney chasing back all the time and trying to affect the game from the centre-of-the-park. It means he’s out of position and can’t influence the game where it counts.

That’s why I’ve been paying so much attention to all the rumours linking the club to Bayern Munich’s midfield talent, Toni Kroos. With The Mirror claiming that Manchester United are prepared to offer the German ace £260k-a-week if he moves to Old Trafford (and presumably a large transfer fee to Bayern Munich – this deal won’t come cheap), perhaps David Moyes is finally in a position to wrap this one up.

The 24-year-old would certainly be a significant step-up on the likes of Darren Fletcher and Tom Cleverley. Both are decent enough footballers, but Kroos is a world-class footballer who would help to take The Red Devils to the next level.

I certainly like the thought of Kroos slotting into Manchester United’s midfielder alongside Juan Mata. These two have the technical ability, passing range and winning-mentality to drive this club back up the Premier League table.

Whether or not Kroos is worth £260k-a-week is almost beside the question. If he instills believe throughout this United side and helps other players to perform better, he’ll prove to have been an astute signing.

I certainly look forward to seeing whether David Moyes is able to wrap this one up.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United offer Toni Kroos £260k-a-week? Are there cheaper options out there who could be just as effective?
