Lazar Markovic

Liverpool’s title-march continues, but there’s still plenty of speculation about what Brendan Rodgers will do in the summer transfer window. I’m sure that The Reds boss will have his priorities right and that he’ll barely be able to think more than a game-ahead at this moment in time, but it’s still fun to speculate about what the future holds.

Will Brendan stick with what he’s got, or twist and bring in a few more talented individuals who could help take Liverpool to the next level?

According to The Metro, Liverpool ‘are stepping up their interest‘ in Benfica’s highly regarded young winger, Lazar Markovic. The source claims that The Reds sent scouts to watch the player in action last Thursday when the Primeira Liga side took on AZ Alkmaar in the Europa Cup.

Lazar was a 70th minute substitute as his side walked away with a 2-0 victory (both goals were scored by Rodrigo – maybe Liverpool should be interested in him too?). I’m not sure that The Reds scouts will have learned too much from the visit, but by now it’s clear that he’s the real deal.

The Serbian is just 20-years-old, but he’s already beginning to show form well beyond that which typically belongs to his age group. He’s scored 7 goals this season and his impressed with his pace, technique and overall build-up play.

It strikes me that Lazar Markovic is a player who could develop into something very special indeed over the coming years. If he’s given the right guidance and enough game-time, he could become a world-beater.

An earlier article by The Mirror suggested that Lazar Markovic could cost as much as £20m. That’s a lot of money, but it’s a fair reflection of the player’s current reputation and the potential he has. If he continues to develop at this rate, his price-tag could double over the length of his next contract.

In other words, signing Lazar Markovic could be a wise investment for Liverpool. The thought of him and Raheem Sterling paying down the flanks, supporting Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge is mouthwatering. Make it happen Brendan!

What’s your take? Can The Reds afford to chase Lazar Markovic?
