Can Manchester United still afford to chase Adam Lallana?

Adam LallanaThings just aren’t getting any better for Manchester United are they? This side appears to be in end of the season coasting mode and this showed during their 2-0 defeat against Everton at the weekend.

The Red Devils have put in their fair share of lacklustre performances this season, but that was one of the worst of the bunch. A few United chances aside, it was clear throughout that The Toffees were the better team.

If Manchester United are going to turn things around, they may need to look for inspiration from outside of the club. In other words, Manchester United need to take to the transfer market with force this summer.

If they don’t go out all guns blazing, there’s a good chance that this club will get left behind by the Chelseas, Manchester Citys and Liverpools of this world. Heck, they could even lose further ground on the likes of Arsenal and Everton.

Whoever’s brought in will have to be world-class footballers. This brings me to a story courtesy of The Mirror, that claims that Manchester United are still interested in Southampton’s superstar midfielder, Adam Lallana.

They also suggest that any potential deal could be quite complicated as The Saints won’t want to lose their best player on the cheap and will be forced to pay 25% of any transfer fee to Bournemouth (where he was scouted when he was just 12-years-old).

In other words, The Red Devils will have to cough up a decent amount of cash to make any potential deal happen. Still, I can’t help but feel that he’d be a worthy investment.

He’s played 39 times for The Saints this season, finding the back of the net 10 times. He’s also impressed with his technical ability, his attacking verve and passing range. He’s probably been Southampton’s best player and I’m sure he’s set to take up a bigger role in the England international side.

With rumours suggesting that Manchester United will have a fortune to spend this summer, it shouldn’t be too difficult for the club to close the deal, regardless of the additional 25%. Let’s just hope that they’re ready for a battle.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United still be chasing Adam Lallana? Are there other options out there?
