Would this £50m double-deal get Manchester United back on track?

Ross BarkleyManchester United’s recent 3-0 victory over West Brom provided a welcome break from a tough season. The Baggies had recorded a 2-1 victory over The Red Devils back in September, so this comprehensive win was particularly satisfying.

Still, back in the days of Sir Alex Ferguson (why does his time as manager seem like a thing of the distant past, when in reality he’s been gone for less than a year?) a win over West Brom would have been considered a formality. Nowadays, Manchester United could lose to just about anybody. They’ve been proving this since the start of the season.

Unfortunately, new signings Marouane Fellaini and Juan Mata have been unable to turn things around. The signs are there that both players will have a major role to play next season, but I can’t help but feel that they both need a little support.

When the summer transfer window swings by, David Moyes needs to be brave (he certainly needs to be more courageous than he is with his tactics). He needs to put his money where his mouth is and bring in some more world-class talent.

If The Star is to be believed, that’s exactly what he’s looking to do. They claim that The Red Devils are in the market for two young British wonderkids, Everton’s Ross Barkley and Southampton’s Luke Shaw.

Both have hit the headlines recently, with Shaw impressing during his England debut and Barkley’s smart running setting up Romelu Lukaku for Everton’s only goal during a 4-1 defeat against Arsenal.

The Star even claim that £50m has been set aside in order to make these deals happen. Whether this would be enough remains to be seen.

Of all the young English talent currently working in the Premier League, Shaw and Barkley are probably the two most impressive (especially with Jack Wilshere’s form waxing and waning).

Shaw is the perfect replacement for Patrice Evra and Barkley would slot in very neatly next to Juan Mata in Manchester United’s midfield. Both players would be able to make an immediate impact on The Red Devils’ first team and would doubtless prove worthy of their price-tag.

This summer is likely to be a busy time for David Moyes, but if he can start things off with this double deal, he’d almost certainly be onto a winner.

What’s your take? Would this double-deal send Manchester United rocketing up the Premier League table again?
