Italy v Cameroon - International FriendlyAfter a slow start, Brendan Rodgers has made some serious progress with Liverpool this season. He handled Luis Suarez extremely well over the summer and is now reaping the rewards. The Uruguayan has fired the Reds up the Premier League table and there’s even talk of the club making a late surge for the title.

I do like a good old late surge. And with Daniel Sturridge to back Suarez up and Steven Gerrard getting back to something approaching his best, who’s to say they can’t do it?

Even if The Reds don’t clinch it this time round, they’ll be extremely well placed for next season – especially if Brendan Rodgers prepares adequately and demonstrates his usual sharpness in the transfer market.

Stevie G will be 34-years-old before the end of the season. Philippe Coutinho and Jordan Henderson still have some developing to do.

As such, I wouldn’t be surprised if Brendan went after a world-class midfielder this summer. A player of this ilk could be the last piece of the Liverpool jigsaw puzzle.

With that in mind, I was interested to read the following comments from Juventus midfield maestro, Claudio Marchisio. Check them out:

“Sometimes I have received phonecalls from agents who told me of the interest of clubs such as Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool. But no one from these clubs has ever contacted us directly. And in [that] case I would tell them to talk to Juve.” (Source: The Metro)

He’s been linked to Manchester United for quite some time, but this is the first time I’ve heard Liverpool’s name pop up in conjunction with his. First things first: it’s great to see Liverpool start to get linked to the same high-quality players that their old rivals do.

As you can tell from those quotes, Marchisio has always been rather loyal to Juve, but there’s no reason to believe that he couldn’t be tempted to move to an ambitious club like Liverpool.

The Metro suggest that £20m could be enough for the Reds to wrap up a deal. Here’s hoping that Brendan Rodgers is prepared to test the waters this summer. If he pulls out all the stops he may just get his hands on a player that’s capable of taking the club to a whole new level.

What’s your take? Is Claudio Marchisio the right man for the job?
