When a fresh, young, Spanish talent bounds onto the scene, he tends to attract a lot of attention from the European elite. This is a nation that breeds some of the best footballing talent in the world – players who favour technique, style and quick passing over athleticism, tough-tackling and physical battles.
This brings me to Alberto Moreno, a young Spanish left-back who has been making waves for La Liga side Sevilla. His all action performances down the flanks have generated plenty of speculation that he’ll move to Real Madrid in the summer.
With Fabio Coentrao on the way out at the Bernabeu, Moreno would make a strong replacement. But if The Mirror‘s to be believed, Real Madrid may not have everything their own way.
The source claims that his agent has played down the links to the Spanish powerhouse. It’s also suggested that Liverpool are keen on the youngster and could be tempted into a £15m move in the summer.
After proving to be wildly inconsistent in the Premier League, it looks like Liverpool won’t be converting Aly Cissokho’s loan deal into a permanent one. The French full-back is wildly inconsistent and seems to be particularly slack when it comes to his defensive duties.
This wouldn’t be the case with Moreno, who’s defensively diligent, always chases back, marks the opposition well and isn’t afraid to dive into a challenge.
But it’s his attacking prowess which is most exciting. The marauding Spaniard is renowned for his direct running, his willingness to take defenders on and to cut inside and his pinpoint accurate crossing.
£15m is a lot of money for a young defender (Moreno’s just 21-years-old), but there seems to be a dearth of quality full-backs in world football at the moment. That’s why this is beginning to look like a smart investment on the part of Liverpool football club.
My only concern is Real Madrid’s interest. A bidding war with this Spanish behemoth is the last thing Brendan Rodgers needs this summer. Let’s just hope he has a free run at the player in the summer.
