David Moyes has a lot of work to do this summer. The pressure has been piling on all season and he’ll finally be presented with an opportunity to turn things around in the summer transfer window. He’ll be given an opportunity to put his own team together. A team that he trusts and a team that actually wants to play for him.
I’m sure he’ll be nervous about it too. So far the bad results his team has been producing have been swept under the carpet, because pundits have been willing to acknowledge that Moyes inherited an aging side that was beginning to produce diminishing returns.
But he’s already brought in Marouane Fellaini and Juan Mata. If he adds a couple more bodies this summer, then Manchester United are going to look more and more like a team built in his image. The pressure will still be on, but at least David Moyes will finally have a real chance to prove himself.
As it happens, it looks like he’s pursuing some exciting targets. The Mirror claim that Manchester United have identified Paris Saint Germain striker, Edinson Cavani as the club’s headline summer transfer target. This, I think, should be exciting news for each and every Manchester United fan. In fact, it’s good news for Premier League watchers in general.
The Uruguayan ace is the real deal. He’s got real presence, power and physical strength. He works hard for the team, takes up good positions and endeavours to link up with the midfield. But what’s most impressive about his game is his confidence in front of goal.
Since 2008, Cavani has averaged at least a goal every two games. In fact, during his time at Napoli he found the back of the net 104 times in 138 games. That’s an absolutely sensational return. But it wasn’t a fluke. He’s carried his form over to Ligue 1, scoring 21 times in his first 31 appearances for PSG.
In other words, he’s a natural goalscorer. Quite frankly, I’d love to see him in a Manchester United shirt. Unfortunately, it’s going to take a lot of cash to convince PSG to sell. They’ve already got a healthy bank account and they won’t want to lose a player who has proven to be so effective for them.
Manchester United will need to smash their transfer record once more to make this happen. Let’s see exactly how brave David Moyes is willing to be.
