Arturo VidalImagine, if you will, how David Moyes must feel at this moment in time. He left a club whose fans universally adored him, to join a club where he was seemingly destined to fail. Now the fans are at his back, the media are taking pot-shots whenever they can and Manchester United are in full-blown crisis mode.

When it comes to filling boots as big as Sir Alex Ferguson’s, it’s often best to be careful what you wish for.

Having just lost to rivals Liverpool (lost doesn’t seem to cover it – how about ‘having just been humiliated by…’), Champions League football looks unlikely next season. This will naturally effect the kind of players that Manchester United are able to chase in the transfer market.

Most top quality players (the kind of players who can help to turn things around at Old Trafford) will demand action at the top level of European football. United’s inability to offer them this could send them on their way.

Perhaps this is why regular Manchester United target, Arturo Vidal recently moved to shoot down any chance of a move to Old Trafford. Check out these quotes:

“Real Madrid, Barcelona or Manchester United? It is nice to hear my name linked to Madrid, Barca or to Manchester United, but I think only about training, the rest we shall see about.”

“Now I want to give everything for Juventus, because when one starts to dream, they move too far away from football. I want to stay focused and wear the shirt of Juventus.” (Source: The Mirror)

The player is clearly being respectful to his current club here. I can only wonder how he’d react if Manchester United were to make their interest more pronounced.

I hope that David Moyes continues to probe and draw out the player’s interest. Vidal is, after all, one of the most exciting midfielders in the world. He’s a quick passer of the ball, he’s got slick feet and a smart footballing brain.

He’s the kind of player that United need if they’re to awaken from their slump. It’ll be interesting to see whether Moyes can pull this one back and start re-building his reputation.

What’s your take? Is Arturo Vidal the right option for Manchester United? Will they really be able to pursue him without being able to offer Champions League football?
