William CarvalhoHaving spent big on Juan Mata during the January transfer window, all eyes are on Manchester United to see what they do next. Speculation suggests that David Moyes will look to add a little steel to his midfield, so that his more crafty players are provided more protection, more time on the ball and more space to work their magic.

There’s no point signing a player like Juan Mata if he’s not going to be given a proper opportunity to strut his stuff. Signing a defensive midfielder could be a very smart move indeed.

Yes, Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher are capable of playing in the holding role and doing good jobs, but neither of them are particularly tough characters. Fletcher has some dynamism, but he’s not physically imposing and Carrick can keep the ball, but he’s not really capable of winning it back.

With this in mind, I was excited to see Manchester United pick up a link to Sporting Lisbon’s midfield wild-card, William Carvalho. The Mirror claim that United sent a scouting team to watch the 21-year-old in action last month and that the envoy was impressed by what they saw. The source now suggests that United have opened talks with Sporting.

The Portuguese youngster has shot to prominence over the last 12 months, with his strong, tenacious performances in the middle of the pitch. He’s extremely athletic, works hard, throws himself into tackles and is rarely caught out of place.

As a result, his price-tag has sky-rocketed. The Mirror suggest that he could cost as much as £30m. That’s a lot of money for a player who’s barely out of his teens and who lacks experience at the top level. Having said that, it’s clear he’s set for a big future.

He’s already got 2 caps for the Portugal international team and with all the clubs monitoring his current situation, I wouldn’t be surprised if he got some experience at a top club soon enough. We just have to cross our fingers that this club ends up being Manchester United.

Signing William Carvalho will give players like Juan Mata and Marouane Fellaini a chance to excel in a more attacking role. Whether or not that’s worth £30m is up to David Moyes and the rest of the United top brass to decide.

What’s your take? Is William Carvalho a good choice for Manchester United?
