Can Manchester United really compete for this unhappy £55m star?

Edinson CavaniAs if Ligue 1 football wasn’t boring enough, Paris Saint Germain’s financial firepower has transformed the French domestic league into a one-horse race. At the moment Laurent Blanc’s side is six points clear at the top of the table and nobody looks like catching them anytime soon.

One of the main reasons for their success is the consistency of their Argentine striker, Edinson Cavani. Since arriving in the French capital last summer, the powerful centre-forward has found the back of the net 21 times – considerably more than his PSG team-mate, Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

He has a knack for getting in dangerous positions and he certainly knows how to apply a finish. He’s a powerful presence, he works hard and it strikes me that he’s something approach the ‘complete striker’.

So it’s a little surprising to see that Laurent Blanc is pushing him out to the right flank. You don’t buy a Ferrari to drive it in the slow lane, do you?

The Mirror recently wrote an article suggesting that the Argentine ace was growing increasingly restless with his lack of centre-forward action. They then went on to suggest that Manchester United were ‘on red alert’ and are ready to swoop if Cavani decides he wants a change in scenery.

This, I think, is exciting news. Edinson Cavani is one of the most naturally gifted centre-forwards in world-football. To say that he could do a job at Old Trafford would be an understatement.

Of course, David Moyes already has Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie among his squad, yet I can’t help but feel that Cavani would be a step up on both of them. He’s simply that good.

As such, there’s no way that he’ll come cheap. If The Red Devils are interested, they’ll need to put their money where their mouth is in a major way. PSG spent £55m on the Argentine last summer and there’s no reason why they’d accept a loss on the player, even if he is unhappy.

I’m not sure whether Manchester United can afford to chase Edinson Cavani, but I’d certainly like to see the club try.

What’s your take? Is Edinson Cavani a realistic target for Manchster United?

Would love Edison at man utd van persie and Cavani would be great. Then when van persie retires or leaves it will be Cavani and hennandez, Cavani however should be the last purchase after 2 defenders a left back and maybe 2 midfielders. Also Cavani is from Uruguay not Argentina.

More like – is Man Utd a target for Cavani? Certainly won’t be looking for a team with dim hopes of making CL next season !!!
