Bacary SagnaIn general Arsenal are a fantastically run club. Arsene Wenger’s philosophy has pervaded its way into the mindsets of the Gunners’ top brass, who exercise good sense in the transfer market, offer their manager support whenever necessary and work hard to make sure the club has a healthy future.

So why is it that the club is always so slow to offer their best players new contracts. Why was it that players like Samir Nasri and Robin Van Persie were allowed to enter the last year of their contracts?

Why did Arsene Wenger let a player like Theo Walcott hold the club to ransom? It’s extremely frustrating to see the Gunners lose their best players because of a lack of planning and foresight.

Of course, Arsenal don’t always get it wrong. The Gunners offered new deals to Jack Wilshere, Alex Oxlaide-Chamberlain, Kieran Gibbs and Aaron Ramsey last season, all of whom have big futures at this club.

But why didn’t they try harder to get Bacary Sagna to sign a new deal at the time? The Frenchman will be out of contract at the end of the season and will now surely be tempted by the big wages that will likely be part and parcel of his new found ‘freebie’ status. That may not have been the case a year or so ago.

Indeed, The Star claim that Bacary Sagna has turned down Arsenal’s offer of a new deal and has already told his team-mates that he’s off. To make matters worse, both Manchester City and Chelsea are circling around Sagna, ready to snap him up when he becomes available as a free transfer.

As such, Arsenal aren’t just losing a key team member, they’re also strengthening their direct rivals. This strikes as a lose-lose.

Sagna has been a consistent performer for the Gunners and a loyal servant for a number of years now. Yes he’s getting on in years (he’s now 30-years-old), but it seems rather churlish to quibble about money.

He’s got another two-three years left at the top of his game and it’d be a mistake to put him out to pasture at this moment in time. Let’s just hope that it’s not too late for Arsenal to turn this one around?

What’s your take? Where does the future lie for Bacary Sagna?
