What can Liverpool realistically achieve this season?

Brendan RodgersWhatever happens throughout the rest of the season, I can’t help can’t help but feel that Brendan Rodgers has earned a big old pat on the back. After adjusting to his new surroundings, the former Swansea City man has done a fantastic job transforming Liverpool into a competitive beast once again.

For too long the Reds have coasted by, trying to spark themselves into life with big-money transfers and managerial gambles. Rodgers took charge at Anfield with a long term plan in mind and a good grasp of how to manipulate the transfer market.

Signing Daniel Sturridge from Chelsea for less than £12m is a nothing less than a masterstroke. He’s also the man who brought Philippe Coutinho and Mamadou Sakho to the club, two players with very promising futures indeed.

Whilst I wish he had brought somebody in during the transfer window, the Reds are still in a strong position. In fact, at some stages throughout this season, pundits have been talking about Liverpool as though they are title challengers.

This, I think, is wishful thinking. Brendan Rodgers, on the other hand, has been a little more realistic. Check out these quotes:

“I was at the Manchester City v Chelsea game the other night and I look at the squads they have, which they have built up over the last few years. It’s very difficult for us, even though we have competed right the way through the season.”

“…There is still a lot to play for and we will be fighting right until the very end. But if I’m asked to give an honest answer, I’d probably say that this year is too soon for us.” (Source: The Mirror)

Whilst Jose Mourinho has made similar claims, it has to be said that Chelsea look a lot more likely at this moment in time. Rodgers is working on a long-term project and isn’t blind to the fact that his current squad isn’t as strong at the Premier League’s top clubs.

A more realistic goal would be to aim for a Champions League slot. This would provide the fans with something to cheer about and give the club a platform to build upon next year.

Then it’s up to Brendan Rodgers to decide whether his team is ready to compete next year.

What’s your take? Are the Reds ready to challenge for the title?
