Have the Reds missed out on their opportunity to sign Yevhen Konoplyanka?

Yevhen KonoplyankaWith Liverpool currently well placed in the Premier League, I’m surprised that Brendan Rodgers didn’t strengthen his squad during the January transfer window. This was his opportunity to stake his claim on a Champions League slot, whilst continuing to build on the success he has created thus far with the Reds.

I guess it’s not like he didn’t try. We know that Liverpool went in for FC Basel’s Mohamed Salah, before Chelsea put any potential deal to bed by flexing their financial muscles.

We also know that the Reds had the hots for the highly regarded Ukrainian winger, Yevhen Konoplyanka. The crafty midfielder is known for his pace on the ball, speed of thought and willingness to take players on. He’s an exciting player to watch because he’s so direct and unpredictable.

I can’t help but feel that the Ukrainian would have been the perfect tonic to Victor Moses, who has failed to impress for the Reds this season. Moses has plenty of pace, that’s for sure, but he doesn’t exploit his qualities in quite the same way that Konoplyanka does.

The Dnipro ace has earned his lofty reputation and deserves to play on a bigger and better stage. Liverpool could have offered him this. What’s more, we know that the player was keen on the move. Check out these quotes from his agent, Oliver Cabrera:

“The player wants Liverpool.” (Source: The Star)

Quite succinct, right? Well his agent also lists the following options: “Italy, Spain, France, Germany. A top league, well.” Oh, is that it?

His agent has also been clear to point out that Liverpool may have missed their chance.

“Happiness is a very complex thing. During the summer we will all again (consider) offers. PSG there was also (talk of) but it did not then materialise. For the players, everyone wants the top leagues in the world, such as those mentioned. There were so many interests for him and (he) is intended for a great team.” (Source: The Star)

Whether Cabrera is just trying to maintain interest in his client is unclear. Whatever happens, however, I hope Liverpool don’t drop out of the race to sign Konoplyanka. His talent is clear and the Reds need another body in this area.

Missing out on him would be a great shame.

What’s your take? Should The Reds continue to keep tabs on Yevhen Konoplyanka?
