Ezequiel GarayManchester United have been linked to Ezequiel Garay for quite some time now. The Benfica defender is one of the most promising defensive talents in world football. It’s little wonder that United are interested. That’s surely why, for the last three transfer windows or so, his name has always seemed to pop up as a potential target.

The fact that his Wikipedia article lists his ‘Current Club’ as Manchester United (at the time of writing), is revealing. Both club and player have been inseparable over the last 18 or so months.

Unfortunately a move has yet to materialise and the links have gone rather cold. As Sport Witness note, Zenit St Petersburg went in pretty hard for the player and at one stage a move to Russia seemed to be inevitable. As of yet, however, everything’s up in the air.

Sport Witness even claim that Garay isn’t pushing for a move to Zenit and would prefer Manchester United, were he to be given the choice. He has a 20m euro price tag (approximately £16.5m) which isn’t outside The Red Devils financial wheelhouse.

If David Moyes is interested a summer transfer could still be on the cards, providing the Russians don’t pluck him up first.

Having enjoyed two seasons with Real Madrid (making 31 appearances) and three seasons with Benfica, Garay has plenty of pedigree. He’s also made 18 appearances for Argentina, which serves to underline his increased standing in the International game.

He’s tall, he’s powerful, he’s quick along the deck and he positions himself well. Best of all, however, he’s a fighter. With Nemanja Vidic on his way out of Manchester United in the summer, Garay could be the ideal replacement. He has the quality and the character to be a defensive rock for The Red Devils for many years to come.

Whether David Moyes will finally conjure up the courage to make a bid for Ezequiel Garay remains to be seen. With all the change that United’s defense is about to undergo (Rio Ferdinand is also likely to leave in the summer), I’ll certainly be keeping my fingers crossed. Let’s just hope that the Russians don’t scupper this deal.

What’s your take? Should Manchester United finally make a bid for Ezequiel Garay? Are there other options that David Moyes should consider?
