Are things about to get worse for Newcastle United?

Papiss CisseThe last couple of weeks haven’t exactly been easy for Newcastle fans. Whilst the January transfer window is a source of great joy for the majority of football fans, Geordies tend to spend most of the month biting their knuckles and praying for it all to end.

That’s because they always have that one stand out player, who has clearly outgrown his surroundings and is looking for a step up in quality. We’ve seen it happen to Andy Carroll in the past. Then Demba Ba. This time round, Newcastle fans have had to wave goodbye to their talented French midfielder, Yohan Cabaye. I can’t help but wonder how long until the same thing happens to Hatem Ben Arfa.

It’s tough, because Newcastle United don’t really have the financial firepower to fight off interest from bigger clubs. When PSG came knocking and Cabaye’s interest was clear, the Magpies had no real chance of keeping their man.

Yohan Cabaye will be a massive loss for the club. He was the man who provided the Magpie’s midfield with its dynamism. When the rest of his team were struggling to break down the opposition, he was capable of finding the gaps inbetween defenders and making things happen. He also provided some goal threat of his own.

Having just suffered a 3-0 defeat to rivals Sunderland (who are relegation candidates, no less), the last thing fans wanted to hear was that another of their players could be moving on in the coming weeks.

Yes, the British transfer window is closed, but The Mirror claims that Newcastle could still lose Papiss Cisse to Rubin Kazan as the Russian transfer market remains open for another two-three weeks. The source suggests that Newcastle will get £10m for his sale.

This is a decent amount of money, but I’m not sure it fully accounts for what he offers Newcastle United. With the Toon short of options upfront, it would be foolish to sell on one of their only centre-forward options.

I fully understand that Cisse’s performances have dipped over the last couple of seasons, but the man still has pedigree. 29 goals in 79 appearances isn’t a bad return for a team that doesn’t create as many chances as the very top clubs. If the Senegalese international were to re-find his feet at St James’ Park, he’d be a real asset for the team.

But let’s not forget: Alan Pardew isn’t spoilt for choice in this area. Selling Papiss Cisse just wouldn’t be a smart move.

What’s your take? Can Newcastle afford to lose Cisse? Would £10m be a good return?
