Arturo VidalOh dear. Just when it was beginning to look like David Moyes had turned things around at Old Trafford…

The result against Tottenham on New Years Day only served to underline what a difficult season it’s been for Manchester United. They’ve had to adjust to a massive change (the loss of Sir Alex Ferguson) and the arrival of a manager (David Moyes), with a new set of principles and tactics.

We’re only in January, but what we’ve seen thus far has provided ample evidence that Moyes’ philosophy isn’t meshing well with Ferguson’s old players. Something needs to give.

I can’t help but wonder if David Moyes will attempt to stamp his own mark on the squad this January. Could a big money signing be on the way? Manchester United fans will certainly hope so!

According to The Mirror, The Red Devils are ‘set to break the bank’ in an attempt to sign Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal. The Chilean certainly wont come cheap. He’s extremely highly-regarded throughout Europe, loves his current club and has no real reason to move at this stage in his career.

That’s unless Manchester United can give him a reason. Ample financial remuneration often serves as a potent motivator after all.

It’s easy to see why David Moyes might be interested. This is the player that he should have signed instead of spending big money on Marouane Fellaini. Indeed, the two players couldn’t be anymore dissimilar.

Vidal is short (relatively speaking, he’s 5 foot 11 inches tall), sprightly and extremely smart. Whilst both players share remarkable technical ability, it’s Vidal who’s more often given license to use his abilities for attacking purposes.

The 26-year-old can play anywhere across the midfield, but he’s most commonly deployed as a box-to-box midfielder, helping out with defending wherever possible (he’s a tough tackler) and getting forward to support the attack as Juventus sweep forward.

This is where he’s really excelled. In 104 appearances for The Old Lady, he’s found the back of the net 34 times. The man’s a double threat. I can’t help but feel that he’s a complete midfielder. Surely that’s why Bloomberg listed him as the 11th best midfielder in 2013?

It’s not clear whether Manchester United can afford to compete for him, but wouldn’t it be great to see them try? Vidal could be just the man the club need to turn things around.

What’s your take? Should David Moyes attempt to sign Arturo Vidal?
