Should Manchester United complete their January spending spree with this £35.1m deal?

|

Diego CostaDespite having wrapped up a deal for Juan Mata (who cost the club a pretty penny), Manchester United continue to attract the attention of a slew of gifted footballers.

Good thing too – this Manchester United side are in real need of a talent injection. David Moyes took over a team that’s devoid of craft, struggles to break down even the most pedestrian defence and has become increasingly shaky at the back.

Yes Juan Mata will go a long way towards fixing these issues, but he could use some help.

This brings me to another one of those gifted midfielders that Manchester United have been linked to. According to The Daily Mirror, David Moyes is on the trail of European football’s hottest property: Diego Costa.

The Brazilian has made a real name for himself over the last couple of seasons, by scoring on a regular basis, demonstrating his flair and leading Atletico Madrid up the Premier League table. He’s blossomed into a world class footballer and one who wouldn’t look out of place at Manchester United (especially in the club’s current iteration).

The Mirror even claim that Manchester United sent a scout to watch him play during Madrid’s 4-2 victory over Rayo Vallecano. Fingers crossed that this means The Red Devil’s interest is genuine.

Still, tying up any deal for the Brazilian isn’t going to be easy. His performances this season have seen him attract plenty of suitors and he won’t be keen to leave a club who’s currently challenging for the La Liga title.

He’d have to join a club who have plenty of long-term potential, but rather limited potential in the short-term. With Manchester United already out of the title race, I wonder if the club will hold much appeal for Diego Costa.

Still, a big pay-package and the right spin from David Moyes could point him in the right direction. This is a real opportunity for the former Everton man to prove his salt in the transfer market. He disappointed during the summer, but should he follow up the Mata deal by signing Costa, everything will be forgiven.

The Mail claim that Costa has a £31.5m release clause, so he certainly won’t come cheap, but talent rarely does.

What’s your take? Would Diego Costa be a smart addition for Manchester United?
