Is this Real Madrid starlet really the answer for Arsenal?

Alvaro MorataI’m writing this article not long after Manchester City gave West Ham a 6-0 drubbing. Yes, the Hammers lack a focal point and represent one of the worst teams in the top flight, but that kind of scoreline tends to send a message out to competitors. City tore apart Sam Allardyce’s side without stopping to break a sweat. It’s a little scary to watch.

In particular, I’m sure Arsene Wenger was paying eager attention. After all, his side struggled to break down this West Ham side a couple of weeks ago. Yes, direct comparisons like this don’t really help, but the difference between City’s forward line and Arsenal’s is rather stark.

Sergio Aguero and Alvaro Negredo are probably the Premier League’s second and third best strikers respectively (behind Luis Suarez). Arsenal, on the other hand, can only really rely on Olivier Giroud, the rather tired looking Frenchman who’s a good performer but not exactly a world-class talent. Yes, Theo Walcott did a good job up front recently, but he’s now out for six months. Who are Arsenal supposed to turn to now? Nicklas Bendtner? I don’t think so.

If Arsene Wenger is serious about challenging for the Premier League title this season and fighting Manchester City to the end, then signing another striker could be paramount.

We’ve heard a lot of rumblings in recent months concerning Arsenal and Alvaro Morata. The Mirror have picked up this story, claiming that ‘Wenger is on red-alert’ to make Morata a January signing. It’s thought that a stop-gap loan deal could be on the cards.

The Spain U21 is a talented individual, who has managed to slam home plenty of goals for the Real Madrid B team, without ever really troubling the first team. At the moment, it’s unlikely that he’ll be able to work his way up the pecking order at the Bernabeu (barring some minor miracle). As such, a loan move like this could prove to be a good step in his career.

It’ll give him a chance to prove that he can score goals at the top level. It’ll also give Arsenal access to something a bit different: Morata has pace, technical ability and nous. He’s more like the Arsenal strikers of old, than the sluggish, workaday strikers currently at the Emirates.

As such, it would be foolish to turn your nose up at this one.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal take this Real Madrid starlet on loan?
